On Your Next Vacation, Don’t Get Into the Water Without the Pool Management Having a Certified Pool Operator

Employees are trying to use up unused vacation days before year end. People are longing for warm weather destinations and jumping into their resort pool to wash away their stresses. But what are those pools really washing away? When you are in places with less strict regulations, you might want to take a few steps before swimming.

“In only 19 US states is it required to have a certified pool operator to maintain your pool,” said Trevor Sherwood, Pool Operation Management. “And, regulations are non-existent in many Caribbean locales.” With pool management and operator certification unregulated in many parts of the world, you really can’t be sure of the quality of the water when you get into a swimming pool. But what can you do?

“You can ask the pool attendant what the water chemistry is and when it was last checked,” said Sherwood. “This will give you an idea of how often they balance their water and check their chemicals, which is essential to bather comfort.” Most people know that chlorine or a chlorine substitute is needed in swimming pools, as it is the chemical that kills off many of the bacteria that can grow in pools. If there is no chlorine in a pool, you might want to reconsider entering the pool.

Before your trip, you can check online for country or state regulations for pool operation management information. “When I travel, I use test strips to check the water chemistry of the pool,” said Sherwood. “If it is balanced, I feel better about swimming.” You may also want to shower before and after entering the pool, and wash out your swimsuit after each use. While you can’t ensure that your destination’s swimming pool has a certified pool operator, you can take a few steps to ensure a healthy swimming experience for you and your family.
