Car Accidents Are Scary

Car accidents are one of the scariest and difficult aspects of life to deal with on a day to day basis. Accidents can be minor, major and even deadly. They are a part of everyday life all around the world. Since the invention and mass production of the automobile, people have been getting into accidents on the roadways. There are all types of accidents. They can involve another vehicle, a pedestrian, a bicycle, an inanimate object or an animal. Accidents are also referred to as fender benders, an MVA, an MVC, a collision, an incident, a smash-up, a crash or a wreck. All of these describe the same thing no matter how many vehicles are involved. When the accident involves five or more automobiles, it is referred to as a pile-up.

A majority of accidents are caused by the driver of one vehicle not paying attention to the roadway. They could be fooling with the radio dial, inserting a CD into the CD Player, eating, combing their hair, shaving, talking on the cell phone, yelling at children in the back seat, fumbling through the glove box or simply day dreaming. Plenty of accidents happen as a result of the driver falling asleep at the wheel either very early in the morning commute or late at night. Other serious accidents, more likely than not the deadly ones, occur as a result of drunk driving. The roads are a dangerous place; with speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating and road rage.

The number of fatal accidents worldwide has declined since the year 1980 but has increased in the United States from 1994 to 2003. It has been noted that the possible reason for the decline in fatalities across the globe is because of the increased number of vehicles on the highway. If there is more congestion, there is less room to maneuver, thus causing a worldwide slowdown on the roadways.

Vehicle operators that are the cause of a deadly accident can face a slew of charges. They are manslaughter, murder, assault with a deadly weapon, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and reckless driving. Defendants of a deadly accident court case can face anywhere from jail time to a life sentence in prison. In some cases, where applicable, it is possible that the defendant could face the death penalty.

Police across the country enforce various checkpoints on a daily basis to catch excessive speeders, drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts and drivers operating a vehicle under the influence. The latter is known as a sobriety checkpoint and they are most notably enforced during peak driving times such as Thanksgiving weekend, the Fourth of July, Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.

Many states in the country have imposed new laws for young teen drivers that include driving curfews, limiting how many non-relatives are allowed in the car with them at a time and requiring a chaperone to drive with the young teen. These new laws are part of the Cinderella License that many states have adopted to protect their younger, newer drivers from harm.
