A retired professor of sociology, anthropology and American Studies and currently Senior Fellow of the Kahn Liberal Arts Institute at Smith College, Rose is the author of eight books, including "Guest Appearances and Other Travels in Time and Space," and is editor of fourteen others. He has taught, conducted research and been a visiting scholar at universities and study centers throughout the US and in the UK, Japan, Australia, China, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia, lectured in over 40 other countries, and often written about his "extracurricular" activities at home and overseas in newspapers, magazines, and on-line "webzines."

Rose favors articles of 800-1200 words which combine vivid descriptions with personal insights into people and places as well as photographs and practical advice for fellow travelers.
